Made famous by Mark and Delia Owens in Cry of the Kalahari, its remoteness and harsh climate have preserved its raw beauty. The landscape is characterized by vast open plains, salt pans, and ancient riverbeds. Following the summer rains, the grasslands transform, attracting large herds of zebra, wildebeest, springbok, and gemsbok (oryx), followed by the iconic Kalahari lions. The reserve includes the Khutse National Park annex to the south, known for its beautiful pans.

Moremi Game Reserve
Notably, the Moremi Game Reserve was one of the first in Africa established by an indigenous population, the Batawana people. Declared in 1963 to protect the area from over-hunting and cattle encroachment, the reserve now safeguards the heart of the Okavango Delta. It is a vital sanctuary for over 30% of the world’s remaining endangered African Wild Dog population and one of the few places in Botswana protecting the highly endangered White Rhino. This diverse reserve combines mopane woodland, acacia forests, floodplains, and lagoons.

Chobe National Park
Chobe is famed for its massive elephant herds, which often number in the hundreds as they descend to the Chobe River each afternoon. A river cruise offers a brilliant wildlife experience, bringing you close to hippos, crocodiles, and elephants. Be sure to look for the endemic Chobe bushbuck (puku) and over 400 species of birds, making it a haven for photographers.

Savuti
Located in the heart of Chobe National Park, Savuti is renowned for its high density of predators, including large prides of lion and packs of hyena. A fascinating recent development is the return of water to the “lost river” after a 25-year absence, which is dramatically reshaping the Savuti Marsh and its wildlife dynamics.

Nxai Pan National Park
North of the CKGR, this national park centers on a vast “pan” or open grassland. A permanent waterhole acts as a magnet for wildlife, drawing vast springbok populations, large herds of giraffe, zebra, and gemsbok, which in turn attract predators like lion and cheetah.
